Pastor Mainor and Centro Christiano El Remantremanete de Dios

Beach Time with our church from Naranjo
We were so honored that our church from Naranjo decided to drive 4 hours to spend the day at a  beach that was close to us. Here John is talking to Pastor Mainor.

Food distrobutions in Las Lomas

Food Distribution

Here our friend, Paul Young, is sharing a Bible story with the children. Paul needed someone to interrupt his story so I, Cindy, stepped up and practiced my Spanish. After the Bible story, we gave the children candy and then rice and beans for their families.

Being Flexable

During these last 6 weeks, God has been teaching us to be more flexible.  The key to helping people here is by being flexible. This does not mean that our vision is wrong, it just means we may have to take a different path to get the same results.

When we moved to the Gunacaste area, we had a vision to work with the people that are living and working on the streets. We want to show these people the true love of Jesus and that there is a better way to live life.  We are finding that the nightlife is a lot different here than in San Jose and what we were doing there is not necessarily going to work here,.so God has asked us to wait to do the late night ministry on the streets and instead go into some of the poorer barrios and start ministering there.  Right now, we are meeting a very basic need and that need is food. We have started taking dried rice and beans into one of  the  poorest barrios on a monthly basis and are starting to build relationships with the people there. This is a great place to start a prevention ministry. As we have more funds we will increase the  feeding program to more than once a month. We are also praying about other barrios to minister in. The cost of these feeds is about $80, so if you would like to contribute financially please make sure that you include a note that it is for "local feed". The information on how to submit your donation is at the bottom of this page.

We have also started working with another ministry that takes food to the homeless. Every Tuesday, we meet in front of the beach and have a time of  worship and preaching and then give  them a meal. These men also have problems with drugs and alcohol, so this is a great way to start planting seeds in them.

Also, God has aligned us up with another like-minded missionary couple, and we have been meeting on a regular basis to pray together, encourage each other and to also help each other out in ministry. They have needed some help sharing some messages in a small beach church, so John has been sharing for the past couple of Sundays. John never thought he would be doing this, but God knew that this would be part of our ministry here so he is stepping out in faith.

Lastly, we have come alongside a local church that serves both the Tico community and the Gringo community by having two services every Sunday. John just helped them out with a new video for announcements and has been asked to share a message with the Gringos next month. I have been asked to take over the worship part of the service. I have never thought of myself as a worship leader, but I do love to worship the Lord. I am praying about this and would appreciate if you would pray with me on whether I should say yes or no. The worship is done with music that is downloaded from the internet, so this is good, I just need to help the people get more into the spirit of worship.

So as you can see our direction has changed a little, but it is because we will only do what and how He tells us to do it.

Please continue to pray for us as we step further out of our comfort zones and for us to have clear direction as what we are supposed to do here. There are so many needs and we know that we can't do them all, so it is important that we hear from HIm on what He wants us to do.

WIth God ALL things are possible. Matt 19:26.

Lots of love and Blessings,
John & Cindy

P.S. We will be stateside from June 25-July 22 and would love to see as many of you as possible. We will be spending most of our time in Georgia but will also be in Pennsylvania too. Please send us an email if you would like to get together while we are home.

Cindy with a bag of soda

Sometimes you just have to do things the way the locals do. When we were in Nicaragua I, Cindy, wanted a Coca-cola and all the store owner had was glass bottles so he poured it into this plastic bag.

cow crossing

We never know what we might run into when we are traveling in Costa Rica. Here we are waiting while this man brings his cows across the road. You can't see it in this picture but the man that was herding the cows was doing it by bicycle.

Prayer Request

    • For John's brother, Phil, as he is recovering from back surgery.
    • For us to hear clearly from God on the direction that we are to take here.
    • For us to stay healthily.
    • For wisdom as we begin to minister here.
    • For the people living here to surrender all of their life to God.
    • For our son, Jeremiah, to have safe travels as he travels to Texas and then back to Montana. After living in a hotel for months he has finally closed on a house so he will be moving his things.
